This is “Sweet but Psycho” a song by Ava Max, who I hadn’t heard of before, I’ve heard this song in the gym and just out and about pretty regularly, I would have guessed it was fairly new but it’s actually 7 years old:
There’s probably a lot going on in this video, but I was originally interested by the duality of the title/chorus line itself, and how it may relate to a dissociated personality theme that we often see on this site, for example with Sabrina Carpenter’s videos. Looking in to this artist/song, it’s pretty much what I expected.
The singer has a unique haircut, one side is cut short, the other is long, seeing some comments this really appeals to her fans, on top of it she often has pictures like this:
So the “Sweet but Psycho” theme isn’t just applying to this one song, and it doesn’t appear to be about some other character or a person she knows of, but it’s her and her entire persona (at least at this period of her breaking out as a singer, by the way this was her first major single and appears to be her biggest song in a now declining career, just from briefly looking at her youtube views)
As mentioned there’s probably a lot going on in this video, like the chandelier in the opening shot, I’m mainly interested in the split personality aspect and just pointing out highly obvious symbology.
In the opening Chorus which has the line “at night she’s screaming, I’m out out out (of) my mind”, twice in a row during that line it has a shot of Ava Max being “tripled”, just as the word “mind” is said:
Vigilant Citizen did an analysis of Sabrina Carpenter’s “In My Bed” (which is how I noticed the above) and it even shows the same in the thumbnail, it’s about a year after Sweet but Psycho:
It also shows her in 3’s, with many aspects throughout that video of showing the split personalities. And considering during the Ava Max video it happens specifically on the line “I’m out of my mind”, twice, it’s not just artistic.
Throughout the video she also has this “running mascara”, which is cartoonishly beyond any running mascara you could imagine:
Clearly an image of Black Goo, Billie Eilish used a more aggressive form of this in a video only about 4-5 months after this one:
I mean there’s a ton of examples going back way further than this, there’s a Black Goo thread on this forum as well.
One of these videos wouldn’t be complete without one eye symbols, the first at 0:40:
It’s fairly subtle, during a flick of her hair, note that this is on her left side (from her point of view) and then at 1:14 she does the other side, possibly indicating that despite her fragmented mind, both sides are devoted to the one eye symbolism:
And this one’s a lot more deliberate, even if somewhat brief, the shot starts with her holding her eye? And shaking her head and continuing to hold it:
I would not call this a natural behaviour, she’s playing the part of being in distress or sad, and just holding one eye like that? It’s also delivered on the word “crazy”
But we’ve had 2 “characters in the video so far, the one on the staircase, black goo on the couch, and of course we have a third, and this one appears to be in some kind of PVC bondage outfit, this is the one that’s used to invite her love interest over I suppose, I mean what a ridiculous outfit for having dinner:
There’s also a continuous use of her drinking what looks like red wine in some shots, but here it doesn’t in my opinion, that’s not quite red wine and not quite rose:
She also stabs this turkey/chicken, and the next shot is the guy smiling and eating, in a later shot she’s stabbing a picture of him in the middle of his face, cannibalism?
Interestingly when she pours the red liquid in to a glass it turns green, as she says the line about drinking a “potion”, but apart from obviously just being a poisoning/drugging, I’m not sure exactly what this could mean in a bigger picture with regards from turning Red to Green:
At 2:12 we see a subtle introduction of the masonic checkerboard floor tiles (bottom left, more visible in the moving video itself) that this dinner scene has been playing out on, at this part of the video she is still the bondage/PVC character with red hair but now in a wedding dress or other white dresses:
Interesting one eye at 2:42 when the male escapes to a closet from being murdered, this is during the bridge and basically the thematic climax of this video:
And this is the reveal at 2:54 shortly after:
Another already deceased male falls from the closet on to those masonic checkerboard tiles, and this is where I just don’t feel it can be a mere artistic coincidence. It’s related to murder, rituals, and it’s the reveal of the checkerboard (I believe it’s the “reveal”, the earlier one’s I pointed out above were too difficult to see when just casually watching the video)
That’s all I really have, the story itself is just spelled out in the video, would love to hear if anyone spotted things I didn’t see or didn’t mention.
