More and more places can only be contacted by a smartphone or mobile phone (cellphone) or Iphone so reluctantly I’m going to have to buy one, but i’m a PC dummy in my 70’s and know zilch about them. I’ve run net searches but the replies are too technical and longwinded for me to understand (sniffle).

Hi. I recommend buying a Fairphone. They claim to be against the engineered obsolescence that all the other devices have.
a Fairphone 3 /4 / 5 would be good.. you don’t have to buy the latest.
You can use its default operating system, and if need be, replace it with a better one to avoid the 2030 agenda surveillance..
namely GraphneOS or Lineage OS.
IOS sucks.
no need for PCs, they suck too, but if you decide to buy one, just go with windows . the hardware doesn’t matter, any CPU should be enough and 8 GBs of RAM is enough to browse the web.
you can debloat windows with atlas OS, just search how, it’s very simple.
in the end, it depends on what you wanna do, but if you wanna do just basic things, a phone is more than enough.

iOS only sucks if you “update” the device. Bu is great for people in their 70’s because it’s far more simplified than Android.
As long as you don’t constantly update it and mess up the layout they just got used to, iOS is honestly so much better for people in their 70s. Android is great if you love customizing everything, but for older folks, all those extra complicated options usually just end up causing accidental taps and confusing popups.
The biggest thing is how predictable iPhones are. Everything works the exact same way from app to app, so back buttons and swipe gestures don’t suddenly change on you. On Android, a wrong swipe can accidentally throw someone into a completely different launcher or guest mode, which triggers an instant panic call. With iOS, it just stays put.
Having all the settings centralized in one single place makes troubleshooting so much easier, too. Plus, downloading apps only happens through the App Store, so there’s way less risk of someone accidentally clicking a shady link and downloading random third-party junk (like in Android)
If you haven’t checked out Assistive Access on iOS yet, it’s a game-changer. It strips down the home screen to giant buttons for just the essentials like Phone, Messages, Photos, and Camera. It cuts out all the extra clutter so they can’t accidentally mess up their settings.
The accessibility features built into the hardware are incredible as well. The Magnifier app turns the camera into a high-contrast magnifying glass for reading pill bottles or menus, the system-wide large text actually scales properly without breaking the screen layout, and it connects directly to hearing aids without needing sketchy extra apps.
Add in how seamless it is for family to share locations on Find My or drop photos straight into shared albums, and it’s just way less tech support stress for everyone involved.
Also I gave my iPhone to my parents, I do have Android and use Android (Samsung just because of the camera and the coverage) so I am not just talking about iPhone from a “fan obsession point of view”

I already said I don’t use iOS, but Android is the same bs. Graphene OS is different and perfect but NOT for simplicity. For Simplicity a cattle phone. You can have both phones, for work and regular Bill payments, etc just iOS (iPhone) it doesn’t get any more easy than that. Especially for elderly, in the other hand, for privacy Graphene OS, just because Graphene OS is better for privacy doesn’t mean iPhone isn’t the easiest and most simple to use.

android is simple, GrapheneOS is simple to use, it’s just average android without tracking.

In 2026 You can actually purchase a brand new for just $300 even cheaper than most Android flagships. Or just get a new model but used for around $100
It actually does have to very specific things, Limitations/Blocked customizations, which prevents users from changing layouts making it more consistent and basic, it also has Assistive Access which allows the entire OS to be simplified into just a few essential buttons “calls/messages/calendar/browsing/emails” and fully disables all features that allow making interface changes, making it even beyond far easier to use than any other phone. Assistive Access is for people with down syndrome, kids or elderly. It’s why I gave it to our grandparents. They never have any storage issues or layout issues they usually found in Android. I don’t use iPhone anymore. I use Samsung, but I am waiting for the new Motorola Graphene OS model hopefully it has a decent camera.
We ALL have to “be cattle” if you are actually a member of society work and go on world trips, you have to perform as a cattle, you actually need to deal with cattle banking systems, passport, bills, social media, etc. And the best way for an elderly to interact with the digital aspect of it all, would be with an easy to manage device. I actually do app developing for a side, for Android and iOS which means coding and creating from scratch the entire architecture of an app. PLUS I work with many elderly folks as a care taker for DECADES, I have given them Android, Linux, and iOS to use in their every day life. I do fucking know for a fact they will be best with an iOS. If you haven’t spent a day of your life taking care of elderly what the fuck do you know about what’s best for them, so you can bend over and shove up your advice where the sun doesn’t shine

this is the version with 64Gbs, not the one with 256. and with just 4 GBs RAM.

if you use a SIM card then yeah.. they can track you, especially with the 5G - 6G now, that are just tracking nets..
but you can use it as a mini-computer and connect to wifi only, without a SIM.
this is for tracking. as for monitoring incoming calls and texts, just use an app that encrypts these end to end, such as Signal or Matrix.. or even better, XMPP. you can find cool apps for it on Fdroid.
