More and more places can only be contacted by a smartphone or mobile phone (cellphone) or Iphone so reluctantly I’m going to have to buy one, but i’m a PC dummy in my 70’s and know zilch about them. I’ve run net searches but the replies are too technical and longwinded for me to understand (sniffle).

Hi. I recommend buying a Fairphone. They claim to be against the engineered obsolescence that all the other devices have.
a Fairphone 3 /4 / 5 would be good.. you don’t have to buy the latest.
You can use its default operating system, and if need be, replace it with a better one to avoid the 2030 agenda surveillance..
namely GraphneOS or Lineage OS.
IOS sucks.
no need for PCs, they suck too, but if you decide to buy one, just go with windows . the hardware doesn’t matter, any CPU should be enough and 8 GBs of RAM is enough to browse the web.
you can debloat windows with atlas OS, just search how, it’s very simple.
in the end, it depends on what you wanna do, but if you wanna do just basic things, a phone is more than enough.
