I’ve been thinking about creating this topic for a while now, unsure if it’s going to fall on deaf ears – you know, people shrugging it off as just part of life where everything changes whether we like it or not. I’ll preface everything by saying I grew up in the 90s, so I was literally raised with the Internet and remember times when it was quite simple to use, somewhat reliable, and fun to master. Then I look at at what it’s become now – increasingly complex layouts, billion customization options, and constantly changing.
I remember loving to surf the Internet and welcoming most of the improvements that came with general advancement of technology. Then, in my mid to late 20s, the excitement vanished and turned into frustration instead. Constant updates, more and more (in my eyes) unnecessary changes, constant need to readjust and get used to innovations made for the sake of innovating. It just became “too much.” Currently, I just get overwhelmed from all the never-ending barrage of new content, and sites like reddit or Facebook are just overwhelming to use and wrap my mind around. I’ve made the decision to stay away from most major platforms precisely because I get depressed at best, or I’m in a state of panic/meltdown at worst.
Then there’s also a lot to be said about apps no longer working out of the blue due to support ending, updates, or whatever the case may be. It’s like you can’t rely on anything anymore. Things work fine one day, and then you wake up the next day and it’s oops! your ios is no longer supported, gotta get the new iPhone or it’s too bad for you.
I wonder how that impacts our mental health/souls in the long-term…. which might also be a question posed by this topic.
EDIT: Apologies if this comes off as rambling and/or too vague. It’s hard to turn my thoughts into one digestable topic lol. Also huge thanks to VC for making the forums (and the main website!) so easy to maneuver and not headache-inducing! <3
