This has been one of the things toping the list when it comes to downsizing the empire. Dan Caldwell (Hegseth’s former aide that was ousted) wrote this WaPo piece after the 12day war. The Israelis haven’t been quiet about US bases either. The Iran conflict has quickened the process.

After reading this article by the president of the CFR, i’ve resigned myself to the fact that we, collectively, aren’t getting out this. This raises a whole host of other questions and guarantees our slow, rolling, collapse.
Apparently, Trump is aware that reserves are running low which would suggest that the administration is simultaneously prepping for large scale riots, like the ones in Ireland a while back…to say nothing of a national draft.

This was published weeks before the 12day war and it suggests to me that the power players were hoping that should the Iran campaign turn out to be a cakewalk, they’d be able to hit the ground running with Turkey which also means that there were plans afoot to dismantle NATO hence the Greenland drama.
These people ,btw, never articulate the cost of their plans to the rest of us.

Iam not someone who’s really afraid of nukes (i mean, you’re vaporized and it’s over) but with hundreds of articles now on dwindling stockpiles, iam starting to think that the hawks are going to run with this and advocate for the use of unconventional weapons.
One reads statements by hawks saying “Trump needs to finish the job!” but with fewer munitions, how does one get to “finish the job”? Especially, if we are to take reports like these as truthful, that a wider war with Iran is still on the table.

Last but not least, we differ on what should be done. This is the funniest part of Kagan’s article – showing that the man is decidedly beyond salvation. On one hand he calls this a “checkmate” by Iran, and a U.S. defeat that can “neither be repaired nor ignored,” yet an the other hand his solution for it is… surprise, surprise… a bigger war still!
He writes that what’s to be done is “engage in a full-scale ground and naval war to remove the current Iranian regime, and then to occupy Iran until a new government can take hold.”

I live close enough to faslane on the Clyde that I will see the flash but not hear the bang and that feels weirdly comforting.
